Local Interest
Mulroy Bay and Downings

The Murloy Coast Guard Unit is based beside the village of Downings (or “Downies” on some maps). Downings in on the Rosguill peninsula and part of the parish of Mevagh.
The natural landscape of the Rosguill Peninsula provides the basis for many of the activities that visitors can enjoy. In addition to an abundance of golden sandy beaches there are many water based activities in the Downings area - including windsurfing, deep sea diving, sea angling and boat charters. There is also horse riding and hill walking. It is located in a part of Donegal renowned for its dramatic beauty – long sandy beaches, spectacular sea-cliffs, hidden coves, windswept peninsulas and ancient forests.

The famous Atlantic Drive is a short but very dramatic road around the Peninsula. The drive is about 12km long so you can best appreciate it if you cycle or walk. The walk can be comfortably completed in half a day.
New to the Downings area is the Magherabeg Leisure Centre. This modern leisure centre is open to the public and features a swimming pool, sauna, steam room, jacuzzi and gym.

Beside the village (approx. 2 Km), there are two superb championship golf links at Rosapenna -  the Old Tom Morris Course and the Sandy Hills Course; as well as St Patrick's Course in Carrigart (4 Km) and within half an hours drive, there are two more first-rate links courses – Portsalon and Dunfanaghy.

The Lough Salt Drive is another scenic dive in the immediate locality. This drive will bring you through the village of Glen where the renowned Glen Bar is situated. This cosy pub is full of atmosphere and serves excellent food.

Within a thirty minute drive, there are numerous things to do and places to visit. You have the majestic Glenveagh National Park and the beautiful Ards Forest Park. The Lakeside Centre in Dunlewey has something for all the family. In Dunfanaghy there is a Workhouse Famine Museum. Churchill has the famous Glebe House & Gallery as well as the Colmcille Heritage Centre. Letterkenny has all the amenities you would expect to find in a large town - cinemas, museum, theatre, leisure centres, art galleries and excellent shopping.  Tory Island and the ancient walled city of Derry are highly recommended day trips.
