2008 Howth
On the eastern shores, just down from Dublin is Howth. The theme for this year’s event was ‘Coast Guard Old and New’. The events were in and around the fantastic Howth Harbour, with a tented village to show off various Coast Guard equipment old and new. The rocket cart and line launching equipment were a personal favorite. The events were fast paced and fun, with an insight to a few old-time techniques. As well as the usual corner-stones of the Challenge (First Aid, Knots, Chart work, etc) Howth did create a new dimension by having an event on the Friday night, right after the teams were drawn. There was an hour of chart work for all teams simultaneously, followed quickly by a night-time compass & pacing exercise on the fairways of Howth Golf Club! The spectacle of some many torch-beams bouncing around in the dark was a sight to remember. It kept everyone busy, and was a great way to get to know your teammates before the fun of Saturday.
